Lovecrafted Dice: What's behind the name?

Hi. I'm Victoria Tillinghast, the main figurehead behind Lovecrafted Dice. I manage the site, and the social pages, and make each item you can find here.

When I started making dice in 2022, I had no intention of one day selling them. But as a lifelong creative, I found an intense enjoyment in dice-making that was unprecedented at this time in my life. With the help of my husband, we eventually designed, modeled, printed, molded, and made our 100% original dice.

Lovecraft and the Tillinghasts

I get questions about our last name all the time, from golf enthusiasts to UFO hunters, everyone seems interested in the lineage I married into. But my favorite was when I was asked if we were related to Wallace Tillinghast.

Wallace was known as the mastermind behind an aircraft hoax in the early 1900s, when he falsely boasted that he had created a "heavier-than-air" flying craft that was test flown around the Statue of Liberty at 4,000 ft. While this probably isn't true, Wallace's reputation preceded him when a strange aircraft sighting made headlines in 1910.

Amongst the many who "claimed" to see one of Wallace's experimental aircraft was H.P. Lovecraft, who himself was not a believer and instead insisted the sighting was that of the planet Venus. However, it can be assumed that H.P. may have been inspired by Wallace when drafting his 1934 short story "From Beyond" in which a scientist named Crawford Tillinghast invents a cosmic horror that sticks to the expected Lovecraftian themes. H.P. Lovecraft also mentions the Tillinghast name in The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, though it should be noted that the Tillinghast lineage goes all the way back to the first settlers and the name was not completely unheard of in public record before Wallace and his aircraft.

Regardless, the inquiry about Wallace has always stuck with me. And being that my husband and I designed Lovecrafted Dice together the name had a double entendre, and an admittingly cool story behind it.
